"LEAVING LAS VEGAS"
4/29/09
BY MIKEY MIGO

A friend of mine requested that we watch this movie this past week. I thought I had seen it before, but didn't remember anything. It turns out that I got this movie confused with "Honeymoon in Vegas". I'd say there's a HUGE difference in the two movies. Really, HUGE difference. I'm amazed in myself for never seeing this movie. I normally like morose dramas, especially if there's some sort of a dysfunctional love story in the mix. Odds are if you're into these type of dramas then you've probably already seen this. If you're like me and missed the boat, let me tell you… SEE THIS. For me I always think of Nic Cage as being hit or miss. I either like his movies or I hate them. This is a like. It's about a man who's life is spiraling out of control so he decides to leave his LA lifestyle behind and move to Vegas to LITERALLY drink himself to death. Along the way he meets a hooker who is almost as fucked up as he is. The hooker, Elisabeth Shue, rocked her role as well and held back no punches. She wasn't one of those stereotypical movie hookers, but rather just a very lost soul doing what she has to to survive financially and emotionally. The chemistry of the two is great. It's depressing, but to be honest it's still a very beautifully done movie about desolation within and reaching out to nothing. That sounded weird. I'll end it at that.
