I never read the comic and I didn't watch any of the clips online. For me and like many non-comic people this movie came out of nowhere. It looked okay based on the trailer. We get to see an average teenage kid become a super hero and fight crime all wrapped in a typical ironic hipster type of comedy wrapper. Something about it just screamed "Hot Topic" to me. But what the hell, it was R rated and has Nic Cage. The Nic Cage that's not looking for artifacts or taking himself too seriously is the Nic Cage I like. So I gave it a chance out of boredom and wear down. This movie ended up surprising the hell out of me. It's this year's "Zombieland" for sure. Replace the zombie stuff with superhero stuff and you have a pretty similar tone and pretty similar entertainment. I say this with positive intent. It's NOT what the trailer makes it out to be. The trailer presents something much tamer than what you'll see in the theatre. The trailer gives plenty away, maybe too much. I don't want to get into specifics of the plot and certain scenes. The aspect of going into it without much background on it made for a great viewing experience. I would hope YOU would have the same pleasure. It's violent, vulgar, and the most fun I've had watching a movie in a long time. My only complaint was the use of Joan Jett during one action scene. I'm just tired of the recent resurgence of Joan Jett's hit singles. They're fine songs and I've had a great time seeing them performed live a few years ago, but at this point it's annoying. It completely took me out of the scene. I do kind of fear this is due to going in with low expectations, but I do know I want to see it again and have been telling friends to see it whenever the chance appears. My gut tells me that it's somewhere between a high B and a low A if we're giving it a grade. For reals though, you should see it and decide for yourself.
