When I first saw previews for this movie I thought it looked like an A-Team rip off. You know how when a certain theme or genre become really popular or is on its way out and another production company or television station try to crank out something similar as soon as possible to ride their coat tails? Yeah. That’s what I thought was going on here. I knew it was based off a comic book, but the timing still seemed a little fishy. I’m normally not huge on action movies to begin with. I can appreciate a good pop corn explosion movie, but I like them with good characters and substance. So I was iffy until I realized that this movie was written by Peter Berg. I trust him. And then to find out whom the cast was just made it a little easier to swallow. I’m a big fan of Idris Elba, Jason Patric, Columbus Short, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Zoe Saldana is hot and Chris Evans is pretty funny when given a chance. This movie gave him that chance. The movie ended up being way more fun than it probably should have been. It has its share of cheese. In fact, there was more than a few times during this movie that I laughed at the acting, one liners, or drama. It was just so contrived that you had to. A helicopter of children is blown up and I find myself giddy. I’m not a sick minded person, but this movie just made a joke of it all. I hope this was done intentionally because for what is it, I enjoyed the hell out of it. It was like the movie was poking fun at the action movie genre, but not so much as a parody but more so an homage. Each character had their own specific personality and use for their unit. It’s like A-Team, but if A-Team were a comic book written by smart asses. The movie isn’t going to change your life, but it’s a good mindless action flick. Everyone involved should be happy with it because it’s going to be a movie that’s watched over and over again for years to come.
