This is one of those movies that I didn't want to see at all when it was in the theatre. It's one of those movies that I'd continually pass at my local movie renting place to scrounge for anything else but this. This past week, I was weak and didn't give any proper suggestions so I ended up having this movie in the rental stack on top of my cheap DVD player. I basically blacked out most of what I've seen in the trailers so I went into this with an open mind. As the opening credits rolled I thought to myself, "Hey! I like these people and have enjoyed their past work" so things were looking up. Then the movie started and I felt like I've seen a lot of the jokes before in another movie. I can't figure it out, maybe it was an old King of the Hill episode or something. I didn't care much for the story because it felt really recycled, but I did enjoy pretty much everyone's performance. I don't know how, but at the end I cared about Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon's character's relationship being fixed and I cared about seeing Owen Wilson's character succeed in his mission. It's not a DVD I'd want to own or anything like that, but I enjoyed it and will watch it again whenever I cross paths with it again. If you've not seen it, give it a try when you're trying to figure out what to rent. At least, give it a chance on cable. It's not a blockbuster comedy, but it's got charm.
