Over this past weekend, I had the chance to finally see an IMAX 3D presentation of the fourth live action Resident Evil movie. With “Resident Evil: Afterlife” you get what you paid for. Milla Jovovich rocks it as “Alice” once again, Paul W.S. Anderson crams more style into the movie than should be allowed, the Umbrella Corporation is evil, shit gets tense, Alice overcomes, only to find herself in more shit. It’s a rinse and repeat formula, but one these folks perfected. This time out, Alice is looking to go to “Arcadia” in Alaska to meet up with other survivors. She then finds herself fighting an old friend, in a small airplane, in an abandoned prison, and on a ship. She ends up teaming up with the survivors she finds, a handful of tongue-in-cheek Hollywood people. Among them are a famous athlete, an aspiring actress, a famous producer, his assistant, and a few more people. It makes for a few good laughs. From an action sense, the “end fight” was cool, but I big fan of the fight with “The Executioner” in the shower. It was hardcore and bad ass to experience in 3D. In fact the whole movie was a great experience in a 3D front. The imagery and use of layers was a thing of beauty and movies like THIS are the reason 3D movies are so fun. Of course the end leaves it open for another sequel, but that’s as expected. If these movies started giving full closure on things we’d of been done after one movie. In many ways, these movies are kind of like hour and half long episodes. Now I hear more is on the way. I’m excited. I never played the games, so my expectations of what’s to come is based purely on the prior movies and what I pick up from those who have played the games. If a comedy is successful on how often it makes you laugh then a movie like this is successful on how often you jump, say “WTF”, or shout “Holy Shit!” In that case, this movie is a success and was a fun 3D experience. If you’ve enjoyed ANY of these movies, this is the one to get to the theatre to see in 3D before it’s gone. Sure, it’ll be good on DVD but the added atmosphere made for a good time.
