BY MIKEY MIGO
I was mildly curious when I first saw the promotional trailers for this in the early summer. I've never followed the American version of The Office, but I had seen Rainn in a lot of press venues and he won me over. The plot is exactly what it advertised. It's a middle age washed up never was who couldn't get over being fired from his band. The band went on to be HUGE and he bounced around in 9 to 5 hell. He ends up moving in with his sister and her son is in a band… that needs a drummer! Oh no! What ever will happen next? "Fish" (Rainn's character) joins up and things end up happening to where the band becomes an over night success thanks to YouTube. It's pretty much slap stick, slap stick, drama, over the top slap stick, and then closure. The casting was pretty damn interesting. It felt like an Apatow movie made in the 90's that's produced by Lorne Michaels. It's like "Airheads" meets "Tommy Boy" as opposed to "School of Rock" meets "Superbad". Despite enjoying the movie, it felt that "Fish" would have been a supporting character in "Waynes World". The bigger kid/his nephew was like a neurotic Jonah Hill, we had Will Arnett doing his thing as the lead singer of Fish's former band, and tons of cameos from NBC and Apatowland. At least it felt that way. Someone under the age of 23 will probably think its lame and an "epic fail". Still, if you're a fan of 90's comedies (like I am) like the already mentioned "Tommy Boy", "Airheads", or even "Waynes World" then you'll at the very least appreciate this movie. It's nothing groundbreaking for a PG 13 movie, but you will laugh a little and probably watch it a dozen more times in your life.
