I enjoy me some TV. I don’t hide that. I enjoy waiting for the premium channel series to end each season so I can binge without that annoying wait between weeks. So what happens is that a season ends and I then clear a tivo watching all the episodes as fast as I want at my leisure. This means most folks watch a show week to week and it takes then about three to four months to get in the twelve or thirteen episode season done. It takes me a few nights, or even one really long one in some cases. Whatever. Enough about my viewing habits.
My issue today is that Showtime and HBO are making the same shows over and over again. HBO has a bit better quality so they’re being allowed to slide today. I want to channel my rant against the Showtime network. First off, Dexter is great. Nothing wrong there. Same with Califonication. Both are among the very top of my favorite shows on TV right now. The rest is where the channel gets me. It’s officially become “the middle age women of questionable morals” channel. Oh… and they all have ugly kids.
On United States of Tara, it’s Diablo Cody talk for every single character as Toni Collette does characters of stereotypes with VERY predictable storylines. It’s not a bad show, but it’s just… well, like everything else on the channel. In The Big C we have a lady who gets cancer… and is a school teacher… that goes crazy. It’s like if Desperate Housewives and Breaking Bad had a cancer baby. In the show Secret Diary of a Call Girl, it’s a little different because it’s an import show from overseas. Piper Perabo rocks it as a hooker with a heart and mind of gold. Nurse Jackie is my least favorite of the Showtime shows that I’ve got myself watching. Jackie is a nurse, duh, and she’s a self indulgent pill popper. Her personality and character have no redeeming qualities. The show changed so much from the first season and the second seasons that the only thing that stayed the same was the fact that she’s a nurse named Jackie. I want to enjoy the show. The cast is fun and all that, but it’s not that fun to watch. I’m wondering if this is all because of Weeds. Weeds is Showtime’s original “bad girl” show and has been a cult favorite for years now among pot heads and middle aged women. That show was great during the early seasons, sucked for awhile, and JUST got good again.
Why is Showtime filling their schedule with “bad girl” shows? I’m not against female leads at all, but when will it end? It’s repetitive, boring, and the same thing over and over. These shows are summed up with a simple senteice… “A middle aged white women showing her sassy side while doing whatever it takes to hold it all together.” Then just add a twist like “she deals weed!” or “she has cancer!” or “she is a hooker!” or “she is a drug addicted nurse!” or “she has multiple personalities!” From there, it’s the same ugly kids, the same token black person, the same opening credit videos, the same music, the same everything. It’s all the same.
