So I finally managed to catch up on the fifth season of “Dexter”. “Dexter” is easily on my own personal top five favorite shows list. Michael C. Hall is proving he can do no wrong after his remarkable performance in “Six Feet Under”, his very underrated role in “Gamer”, and “Dexter” has five seasons of greatness under its belt. For those who don’t know, “Dexter” is about a blood splatter analyst expert who moonlights as a serial killer. He just has this urge to kill and he fulfills it by killing bad people who were let loose by the legal system or just because he wants to serve his own justice before the law does. He balances this, which he calls his “dark passenger”, while trying to maintain the life of a normal dude. Each season it progresses, yet stays the same. If you’re still reading and haven’t watched this show or aren’t COMPLETELY caught up, consider this your SPOILER WARNING. Last chance. Click another link or move on. Holy shit was this season awesome. When I first heard that Julia Stiles was joining the cast I was a bit nervous. Over the years the show has a pattern and it’s probably the only thing I can complain about. The pattern goes that someone gets close to Dexter, shit happens, he has to kill them and avoid getting caught. It’s the same thing over and over. It was like that in season one with his brother, in season two with the French chick, in three with an awesome Jimmy Smitts, in four with the incredible Trinity Killer storyline, and then it all leads to this season. Last season ended with Rita, Dexter’s long time love interest dead. This season was about how he dealt with her death. He does so by taking on the responsibly of dishing out revenge and justice for his new love interest played by Julia Stiles. She plays a chick named “Lumen”. She was kidnapped, tortured, and all that bad stuff by a group of friends. So each episode we see them working together to kill off these people one by one. The MVP of the season has to go to Jonny Lee Miller, the leader of this bad guy group and a self help guru. He was snarky, fearless, creepy, and kept his cool more often than not. He was a bit “comic book villain”-ish at times. Then again, the show gets that way sometimes. It’s pulpy-noir like qualities make the show what it is. Meanwhile, Dexter has to deal with all of this, Rita’s kids, his baby, his nanny, his sister, and a suspicious co-worker sending a crazy private investigator played by Peter “Robocop” Weller after him. In the end, all is well. Dexter is okay. Still, I think the character grew A LOT during this season and the show advanced in the right direction. I want more and more, but if they ended the show with one more season the show has potential to go out strong before things get a little too repetitive or a little too out there. I mean, it’s out there as it is… but too out there is still possible. Great season!
