This Sunday is the Golden Globes. If you’re watching this for a movie award show then stop now. The only reason to watch the Globes is to see your favorite movie stars dress up in colorful funeral wear. The awards are pretty pointless, despite the fact I’d not mind one or two to use as paper weights. The Oscars are what really matter and we don’t even have nominees yet. The nominations won’t even be announced until January 25th. So this really has no bearing. It might add some buzz for some smaller movies and in some cases this might be the swan song for some movies that just won’t make the cut come Academy time.
I’m not completely against the Golden Globes though. I definitely plan on watching them and seeing who wins and I dig the fact that it forces the film industry to sit in the same room as the television people. In recent years there have been some great movies to come out, a few of them in this season, but television has evolved so much and has been way more consistent than film. I’m an avid fan and viewer of four of the five Drama Series nominations. I’ve watched every episode of three or four of the six comedy nominations. TV is just better this year. For the three or four truly great movies I saw in 2010, I saw some of the best television of my life. HBO, Showtime, AMC, and even the networks are pulling out all stops and putting on a better product than the multimillion dollar budgeted movies.
For Drama we have Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Mad Men, The Walking Dead, and the show I don’t watch in The Good Wife. I’d prefer them to replace The Good Wife with Treme or Trueblood or Breaking Bad. I have a hard time picking. If I have to, I’m going with Boardwalk Empire. On the comedy front it’s less cool. I kind of enjoyed The Big C and Modern Family is consistently awesome. I can’t get into Glee or Big Bang Theory for the life of me. This leaves 30 Rock because Nurse Jackie sucks. It’s a very unpleasant and unlikeable show. It’s not funny at all. I think people are getting “sassy” and “shitty” confused with “funny”. Why Community, It’s Always Sunny, or How I Met Your Mother isn’t listed is lame. Michael C. Hall gets the Drama actor award. He rocked in Dexter and showed more range in the character this season than any other. Then again Bryan Cranston was no slouch either. Drama actress is rough, but I put my support behind Elisabeth Moss. Comedic Actor, I guess Steve Carell but only because Charlie Day from Always Sunny was snubbed. Tina Fey MUST win the comedic actress role. She’s better than Glee and other than that is Nurse Jackie, United States of Tara, and The Big C women. All did well, but none were “funny”. For best supporting actor it’s a shitty field all around, but Eric Stonestreet gets my pick because he seems cool in interviews. Supporting actress is easy for me. Julia Stiles was great on Dexter and I really wish she was staying on board. She brought a whole new life and perspective to the show that was really needed after how the last season left us hanging.
My picks are in bold. I’m going to be way off, I’m sure. I’m amazed that True Blood got snubbed. The show is great. I’m a bit peeved that Weeds got snubbed too. After years of Parker getting nominated during shitty seasons the show gets good and she gets snubbed. And no Entourage? Ever since Piven got mercury poisoning and dropped off the theatre production he gets NO LOVE AT ALL. Screw that. He is still funnier than 99% of the people nominated this year. And nothing for It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia? What the hell? Charlie Day is the funniest dude on TV when Larry David isn’t gracing us with Curb. The show is funny, the cast is funny, and the snubs are shitty. It will be crap, but I will still watch. It’s my duty as an American…
