MiGo vs. The Grammys 2011
02.14.11
BY MIKEY MIGO

The 2011 Grammys have come and gone. Long over are the days that this award show meant anything at all. I’d almost go as far as saying that the MTV VMAs are even more prestigious than a Grammy. Just because it’s on network and has a longer lineage doesn’t mean it should get a free pass. This show is a perfect example of what’s wrong. Lady Gaga shows up in a pod and then does her best Madonna impressions. Nicki Minaj shows up on the carpet and does her best Lady Gaga impressions. The pop stars and divas get their camera time and the girls squeal in delight. A few flash in the pans do their thing. An old timer or two show up long enough for everyone to pretend to be lifelong fans. A couple first time nominations show up and look out of place. Someone does something mildly off kilter and is deemed controversial. Country music is given awards to make it continue to think its actual “music”. It’s the same stuff over and over. There is nothing that’s going to rock the boat and nothing really worth mentioning. Was there any real surprises? Nope. The nominations almost guarantee the obvious. I’m a fan of a few acts that won awards and a few that lost, but for the majority it was a huge waste of time. The state of music in 2011 is a disaster. It’s crazy to think that the Grammys are used to set the standard in what is considered “the best” of what’s currently out there. Believe it or not, I’m not one to shun pop culture and be a snob about it. If I like it, I like it. If I don’t, I don’t. I lived through the 80’s and the TRL stuff and things that most people hate on to this day. My main issue with music, mainly the people showcased on the Grammys this year, is that there just isn’t any passion. Besides Eminem's angry gimmick, there isn't much passion in music these days. Lots of dead emotion and voided eyes. It's like the early 90's again right now. It’s all happy go-lucky smiles and band-aids. There is no authentic soul, no real rebellion, no aggression. The people are happy and they brought bad haircuts and wacky costumes. I’m not asking for a lot here. Just a revolution.
