I’m convinced that I am not in tune with what’s popular. If I don’t like it, it’s popular and if I do, it’s weird or unpopular. It’s becoming that way with music, wrestling, movies, and television. I think shows like Glee, Jersey Shore, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and the like are garbage and insulting to my intelligence. Yet, good shows like Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Freaks and Geeks, and Heroes get cancelled way too early. Movie wise, it’s the same. In all honesty, I’m all for independents, blockbusters, horror, comedy, and just about any genre. I favor comedy and drama, but a good movie is a good movie and I am very opened minded. There are some movies nominated for Oscars that just make me kind of shrug and some that I’m excited about. Instead of complaining about the ones I didn’t think were all that great, I’m going to cut my losses and just throw my picks and predictions out there.
I’ve seen all but three of the ten Best Picture nominations. To me it comes down to Inception, The Social Network, and Black Swan. Those were the three best movies of the year. Most critics are saying The King’s Speech is up there, but it just wasn’t on the level of the others. In fact, The Fighter and The Kids Are Alright were better. Hell, The Town was better and it wasn’t even nominated. I go with The Social Network. It was the best overall movie. While Black Swan and Inception shined in other areas, Social Network thrived all around. For Best Director I go with Darren Arnofsky. As much as I want to go with David Fincher, Aronofsky’s direction in Black Swan is pure art. I’d say Jeff Bridges normally for Best Actor, but I have a feeling that Jesse Eisenberg might come out of this the winner. On the Best Actress side it comes down to Annette Bening and Natalie Portman. I think it’s obvious that Portman wins here and that’s my pick too. Natalie Portman wins, but Bening could surprise. On the Supporting Actor front it’s all about Christian Bale. I liked what the other four nominations have done, but Bale is clearly a notch above them all this year. Supporting Actress should go to Melissa Leo for her performance in The Fighter, but it almost feels like a shoe-in that Hailee Steinfeld is going to win it. Best Writing: Inception, Best Adapted: The Social Network, Cinematography: Black Swan, Score: Social Network, and Song: Country Strong. I think that covers the main ones. I’m sure I’ll be mostly wrong here, but it’ll be a fun night none the less. I’ll check back in next week.
