It’s been awhile since I’ve been excited for a new album release. I’ll anticipate some, but to actually look forward for one is a thing of the past. Right now there are actually a couple I’m excited to hear and the Foo Fighters are one of them. I’ve not heard any of the new singles or anything so really; the video is my first impression of the song. The video starts off pretty simple. They rock out in a white room. I really appreciate the simplicity of it all. One of my favorite videos of all time is “March of the Pigs” by Nine Inch Nails. The whole thing was in a white room. This video takes it one step farther. By two minutes in it silhouettes and light flashes come into play. It’s still really cool. I can imagine some people saying it looks like an iPod commercial. But at like 2:50 they go back to normal with some cool looking flashes and then the red comes into play. I have a big place in my heart for music videos like this. I love in depth narratives for sure, but stripped down rock videos like this are hard to get right. The direction has to remain simple to the design but still layered and interesting enough. The editing has to be smooth, yet jumpy. The performance has to be contained, but still feel like it COULD have been spontaneous. That vibe comes through here. On the song front of it all, I liked it a lot. I’m definitely a fan of Foo Fighters. The opening riffs and build up is awesome. I always dig when Grohl expands his vocal styles. This sounds like Foo Fighters, but a whole new world. Dave has a knack for making really good and catchy rock songs. They have to one of the most poppy rock bands out there right now that still manages to keep their balls and credibility. It sometimes feels like pure rock and roll is hanging on by a thread, but then these guys show up and reminds you that it can still be done. With the White Stripes broken up, the upper echelon of rock is going to be pretty lonely. Someone get them a blanket.
