WWE Night of Champions. It sounds cool, but any true wrestling fan knows this is nothing more than an In Your House with a full PPV price tag. I miss the days of Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, King of the Ring, Summerslam, and Survivor Series being the ONLY shows. It went from that to In Your Houses filling in the monthly gaps, and then generic names, and then before we know it it’s 2011 and we’re already on PPV number 20. I’m exaggerating. Only by a little.
I don’t care about this show. There are storylines and situations I’m interested in, but I’m just immune to this shit. There is nothing to anticipate. People are already trying to figure out the next Wrestlemania card. That’s not until early April of next year. I enjoy WWE. Right now, it’s a fun time to be a fan. It’s the end of an era and we are clearly transitioning into something new. The best part is that none of us have the slightest idea of what will REALLY catch on next and take us into the next “era”. Whatever it is, it’s time for a change. In the meantime, Night of Champions holds us over in between Summerslam from last month and Hell in a Cell next month. Summerslam is a big deal and one of the original four. Then of course Hell in a Cell is going to be big because of the huge gimmick match. I’m sure SOMETHING cool will happen, but it’s safe to say they’re saving their “history making moments” for other shows.
As I type this, there are five matches announced. Alberto Del Rio defends against John Cena. Del Rio MUST win. There’s no way around this. He needs to beat Cena and establish himself ASAP if we’re supposed to take him seriously. If not, he’ll quickly go the same route as Sheamus, Swagger, and other “too-much-too-soon” flops. It’s not a big show and I’m sure they can pull off some shenanigans so Cena doesn’t lose his heat. That said, Albert Del Rio retains. The No DQ Punk/Triple H match will be interesting. I don’t find any enjoyment or pleasure in watching Triple H brawl himself through a wrestling match. I know he’s one of the best of all time, but he just seems a little robotic over the past three or so years. I see Punk having back up here against Triple H. Nash will get in there FOR SURE. The retaliation might be the debut of Colt and the Kings. We’ll see. I don’t think Triple H is done being the ruler of the land just yet so I’m going to have to go with Triple H. Kelly Kelly is going to surprise Beth Phoenix and no one is going to care. Air Boom can’t lose their Tag Titles yet. They don’t give tag teams a name unless they’re going to put it on a shirt. Miz and Truth can get them in a month or two. Surprising the match I want to see the most is Randy Orton defending against Mark Henry. Mark Henry’s push has been amazing and so well done that he really should get the title. I don’t think we’re going to get a real winner here. I think we’re going to get a lot of carnage and some crazy spot that’ll continue to make Mark Henry look like a monster. I still don’t think he’ll get the belt just yet. Randy Orton is putting out the best work of his entire career. I love watching him wrestle these days when it doesn’t involve Christian. He’s putting people over like crazy, having great matches, cutting solid promos, and really hitting his stride on all cylinders. He was given the ball and he’s miles away at this point. I see Randy Orton retaining his belt, but Mark Henry coming away looking dominate and mean. In reality, I’m saying all of this because I want to see Orton take on Henry in a cell next month. That’s something to really anticipate.
