People tell me Summerslam is WWE’s second biggest show of the year. For me, I’ve always considered it to be Survivor Series. It’s the “half way mark” in the Wrestling year with it typically being about six months or so until Wrestlemania. It’s typically when they start planning and putting puzzle pieces together to figure out their next big annual event. The Rock and Cena are already signed and good to go. We’ll mostly always have an Undertaker match to keep the streak going as well. This year we’ve been hearing about a few possible returns and potential feuds. I’m going to take that for a grain of salt and play around a little with the card.
I wanted to stick to a ten match show. I know that’s pushing it these days, but with ten matches I could manage to get most of the valued roster in some sort of match. I’m even going to go with my own match order here. I’m not just going to have the most important to least important for my match flow. They never do that so why would we? Do you think they put a Diva’s match in between the Main Events to screw with people? No. They do it to let the crowd come down and to not burn them completely out yet. Putting together a card with a good flow is a thing of art. I read a blog by Lance Storm about it years ago that described it best. If you’re interested, get at google.
Without further ado, here’s my “Way Too Early To Call Wrestlemania 28 Card”:
Not Booked/Random Battle Royal/Get Them On Screen and Paid:
Christian, Alex Riley, David Otunga, Drew McIntyre, Goldust. Heath Slater, Hunico, Epico, Justin Gabriel, Primo, Santino Marella, Ted DiBiase, William Regal, Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, etc.
Whatever. I’m not a fan of Christian or Alex Riley. They can win this crap that I’ll never see. The rest aren’t worth nothing.
Dark Match/DVD Exclusive/Web Exclusive/Whatever:
Big Show vs. Kane vs. Mason Ryan vs. Brodus Clay vs. Ezekiel Jackson
This ALMOST made the card, but I wanted to stick to 10 matches. This is 11, a big ol’ battle of the big men. They could hype the hell out of it as something like “Big Men of the Present and Future”. We can even throw “Past” in there if they want and get Rikishi, Big Vis, and others involved.
Tag Team Titles: C: Evan Bourne/Kofi Kingston vs. Sin Cara/Rey Mysterio
People keep talking about Sin Cara vs. Rey, but this card is already crammed so why not do it one better. I’d much rather see a crazy highflying tag match to kick off Wrestlemania than Rey and Cara trade head scissors and planchas for 8 minutes. I’m not even saying “Air Boom” keeps their belts until Mania, they can lose them and win them back to other teams if it works.
Intercontinental Title: C: Wade Barrett vs. Sheamus
Both of these guys are in the middle of what seems like big pushes. I don’t see why they can’t join the Cody Rhodes train and help make the IC Title mean something a little more. I’d have Cody drop it to a transitional face and then let Barrett and Sheamus beat the hell out of each other over it. This could be one of those feuds where they fight each other up the ladder like a HBK/Hart or a Triple H/Rock. Basically what I’m saying is that if done right, both guys can benefit here.
World Heavyweight Title: C: Mark Henry vs. Daniel Bryan
I think they’re going to keep building towards this. Mark Henry deserves a long ass reign so I have no problems with him keeping it until this point. Ideally Daniel Bryan would win, but I almost want Mark Henry to swerve the surprise and retain it. Most internet fans will cry if it doesn’t happen and say the Money in the Bank thing was a waste. Not at all. Henry can drop it after Wrestlemania. He needs HIS “Wrestlemania Moment” WAY more than Daniel Bryan does at this point.
Cody Rhodes vs. Mick Foley
Foley’s back/coming back. He’s normally good about putting young guys over. Him working with Cody would rock because they could dig into the old Mankind stuff. If they’ll allow a bloody hardcore match then this is the match I’d want it in. It’s the Mask vs. the Sock.
WWE Championship: C: Alberto Del Rio vs. Chris Jericho
This one will piss people off, but hear me out. The top of the show is already solid. We have The Rock/Cena and then the two other big main event matches on this card. That means it’s the perfect chance to do something a little more unorthodox. Del Rio and Jericho is fresh and would really help ADR. I know people want Jericho and Punk, but I think this can part of that bigger picture.
Undertaker vs. CM Punk
Yeah, that’s right. Does the WWE REALLY want to make CM Punk a legit money making Main Eventer? This is how they do it. I know people will say Taker has found some shitty people in the past, but this is now that is then. When the Undertaker wrestles, it means something. The WWE doesn’t just throw anyone at him, they’ve been throwing Shawn Michaels and Triple H status of people. CM Punk selling an Undertaker Wrestlemania match would be hot. Taker would most likely win, but the “what if” aspect is there. CM Punk COULD be that guy… or not.
United States Title Ladder Match: C: John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Jack Swagger vs. Zack Ryder
To break up the epic match that just happened, we’re getting a four way Ladder Match for the US Title. At this point I’d see the belt bouncing around a little. Dolph’s reign has been awesome and I’d like to see him get a few more big wins and months, but eventually it’ll have to move on. I think it’s safe to say it’s one of these four guys. I’d go with Morrison to come in as champion and for Zack Ryder to WIN. I’m not even a huge Ryder fan and I like the other three better but if they keep pushing him right this would be a HUGE pop.
Kevin Nash/The Miz/R-Truth vs. Triple H/Randy Orton/Batista
What the hell am I thinking?! Remember the whole Nash/Miz/Truth rumors from months ago. I think we’ll still get it. I’d have then run amuck on the shows like old school nWo, but without the charm. Triple H gets Orton and a returning Batista back in a small “One Night Only Evolution Reunion” deal. Too bad Flair is stuck in TNA…
Beth Phoenix/Natalya vs. Kharma/Kelly Kelly
Comedown match. Let Beth and Nattie keep destroying chicks. Kelly Kelly… or Eve…. Or whoever they care most about at the moment can bring back Kharma to destroy them.
John Cena vs. The Rock
I really don’t care about this. I’m sure it’ll be entertaining and full of big moments, but I have no anticipation for it. I think the ONLY good thing that could come from this is Cena going full on heel, but I doubt it. I’ll end with a handshake and lame references to “passing the torch”. The show should really end with Austin coming out and stunning them both.
How horrible does THAT sound?
