Sons of Anarchy Season 4
12/13/11
BY MIKEY MIGO

Around a year ago I watched the first three seasons of Sons of Anarchy. I was hesitant at start. I’ve seen a lot of cheesy biker stuff in my time and I didn’t full trust basic cable for my series viewing habits, outside of AMC of course. But I saw some other shows on basic cable that I enjoyed and I caved in. Turns out, Sons of Anarchy is a really good show. It’s not Shakespeare or anything, but there is a certain prose to its presentation that makes it sorta classy. Kurt Sutter’s writing on the show has been impressive and fun. He takes some big chances and sometimes it comes off a little too hokey, but more times than not it’s mind blowing “must see” television. The cliff hangers from episode to episode are well placed and the cast is as solid as they come. It’s easily one of the best television shows on the air right now and it has potential to really do so much more. If you HAVE seen it and are caught up to the end of this most recent season then keep reading. If you haven’t watched it, go watch it, skip this next paragraph, and thank me later.

If the following is a spoiler to you then you should learn not to skim. Okay, last chance. Okay, we’re all Sons fans here. What the hell happened last season? Season four was crazy. They crammed in a lot of storylines and really didn’t resolve all that much. I wish the show had the balls to pull the trigger on some people. They killed Hale, the evil agent bitch, and Henry Rollins… but Adam Arkin got to flee at the end of season three and now Clay gets to live on. I enjoy Clay’s place on the show and Pearlman is awesome at what he does. It just felt like it was building up to him being killed off and then the switch-a-roo. Jax wanted out and was forced to not only staying behind but taking over the MC. It’s a pretty big arch to run on us and then again… switch-a-roo at the end. It almost feels like we should watch the show and expect whatever they’re building up to not happen. It’d be different if my expectations weren’t met, but the end result was better but it really never is. There’s a lot of compromise here. I was with it the show 100% until the last scene of the season. I get the point. It was to illustrate that Tara is taking Gemma’s spot and Jax is taking Clay/Jax’s dad’s spot. But there was just too many “lingering stares” between Tara and Gemma. Watch that scene again if you get a chance. It’s almost comical. It became like a parody of a bad soap opera. I was all into it and then this weird drawn out back and forth happens and before I know it I’m thinking “what the hell was that” to myself and the credits roll. At this point, the only character I generally like is Happy. It’s not that it was a bad season, but it left me less excited for the sixth season than I was for the fifth.
