I’m into a lot of things people would call “nerdy”, but the “anti-nerd” in me makes it hard to give a show like this a fair shake. I didn’t want to watch the first season of Game of Thrones. I’m just not one to get into fantasy stuff or medieval stuff. I’ve not watched Lord of the Rings because of this. It’s not a genre for me. I do, however, love a great television series. Game of Thrones’ first season was great. The characters were fun, the stories were enthralling, and the visuals were stunning. With one season it came in and put itself right up there with the best of the best cable shows. The overall quality is hard to touch. This has the strength to be HBO’s flagship show for years to come.
But first they had to put out a second season. I wait until shows are completely over before indulging into them. I did that here. I won’t get into all the details of every episode. There are quality reviews of these episodes a few clicks and scrolls away. I wanted to touch on some of the highlights and give an overall review of the season. The season started off slow. Maybe it took me a few episodes to get back into it, but I just kept waiting for a plot twist or development. Then they started piling up. Every character had their own arch and direction for the season. It’s a film-quality production every hour long episode. I really enjoyed Peter Dinklage’s work on the show. If he’s not walking out of every award show without an award then something is wrong. He was great in the season as pretty much the lead of the show. I hated everyone involved with the Joffry storyline. Dinklage has the only somewhat likeable character in all of that situation. Lena Headey has done such a good role in being vile that I don’t know if I’d ever be able to like her in anything else. The dragon lady was annoying this season. The whole dragon part itself was rough for me because it gets into that “fantasy” area. That gets overshadowed by the crazy murderous shadow creature. What the hell was that? Why didn’t that get addressed more? Then the end of the season… yeah! You saw it. What. The. EFF.
There were plenty of things going on, but in general I’ll just say it’s great show. If you’re into it, you’re really into it. The good things about the first season are the great things about the second season. A show can typically fall into a “sophomore slump”, but Game of Thrones pushed ahead with another enthralling ten hours of top notch performances and production. I can’t wait for a third season…. and a fourth, and a fifth, and a…
