I recently sat down with that “Dream Team” documentary on TV. It covered some of the behind the scenes happenings of the 1992 “Dream Team”. For those into basketball at all, that was a HUGE deal. It was like the super all-star team. A team full of Hall of Famers and icons. As a kid, they made the Olympics cool. It was surreal to see Michael Jordan in that #9 jersey passing the ball to John Stockton. It was the golden age of modern basketball and one of the biggest moments was this team coming together in the name of competition, history, and the country.
It’s twenty years later. I know we’ll never see another “Dream Team”, but you’d think the stars of the NBA would want to do something special. Instead, we’re left with scraps. I know some guys are out because of injury, but there is reason to be at least a little suspicious. Mainly because of Dwayne Wade’s comments from a few months ago. He went out there and said that the NBA players should be PAID to be play on the US Olympic Team. His reasoning is that they make a lot of money for the US Olympics and they’re giving up their time to play. Seriously… look it up. A lot of people brushed this shit under the rug and moved on. I’m not a jingoistic good ol’ boy or anything, but I can’t get over this.
The fact that no one seems to be harping on this makes me feel like it’s a common feeling among certain players. Like I said, I know there are some injuries that are keeping some of the top guys off the 2012 team. No one brought up Wade’s comments when he bowed out due to injury. I’ve heard and read others are potentially out as well. Rose is out, but he was out in the playoffs too. Same with Howard, who is busy burning bridges with stupidity. Then we lose Chris Bosh too. That’s a fourth of the twelve man team. Imagine if these four were joined by Kobe, LeBron, Durant, Westbrook, Griffin, Love, etc. THAT team wouldn’t have been in the same awe as the original 92 “Dream Team”, but it would have been at least been a nice nap.
