WWE Money in the Bank ’14 PPV Review
06.30.14
BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

WWE’s Money in the Bank PPV or non-PPV or whatever happened. I went into it with the lowest expectations possible. I basically expected John Cena to win the World Title and somehow win the Money in the Bank suitcase at the same time. I set myself up with metal failure so I’d not get too stressed out or annoyed when the people I’d want to see win go in and pull it off. This is the WWE. A week before this show the company “accidentally” released a poster featuring John Cena and Brock Lesnar for Summerslam. This basically gave away the show. Or so I thought…

The opening match between The Usos and The Wyatts was a fun one. I wanted The Wyatts to win the match but sadly they didn’t. Regardless it was fun. It’s good to see the Tag Team Titles get a great featured spot. A few years ago people bitched about the Tag Team Title scene like it was the end of the world. Not anymore, huh? I think it’s time to see Golddust and “Stardust” get their shot at the belts again. Even if it’s a Four Way involving Rybaxel, it’ll be good stuff. With NXT’s “Ascension” getting the call up the scene should be pretty hot. One more convincing face team would be a good thing.

Paige and Naomi was better than I expected. They had a slip up on the top rope, but covered it well and made it part of the match. It was a really solid match. It wasn’t as engaging as the Alicia Fox/Paige feud recently, but it wasn’t bad. I’d like to see them get another featured match or two to let this story play out.

I’m a fan of Adam Rose. I’m not a “rose bud”. I’m a fan. Leo Krueger was an awesome FCW talent that could work but his character was lame. Now he has a really over the top character to match his talented ring work. People are comparing it to Russell Brand, but it’s more than that. It’s like a party guy, Warhol, and Glam rock character. Just because he’s a happy-go-lucky English guy doesn’t mean he’s automatically “Russell Brand”. It’s like when people compare every athletic black guy to Booker T or every masked high flyer to Rey. Sandow is awesome in his current slap-stick role. He’s basically the heel version of Santino. In time I hope they can transition him to something more serious or threatening, but he’s filling a needed role right now.

The Money In the Bank match was exciting and well done. There were legit times I thought most of the wrestlers could win it. I wanted a Dolph or a Kofi to steal it but I expected Rollins or Ambrose to take the case. I was worried we’d have seen Swagger win it. Despite all the cool spots and moments the ending ruined it for me. Rollins could have won, but to have Kane’s help made it cheap. Not a “boo! What a bad guy!” type of cheap but more of a “this wasted my time” kind of way. Why didn’t Kane just come out from the start and help Seth instead of making him go through hell before cheating to win? Lameness. The spots were awesome and memorable, but I have no desire to ever rewatch this match because of the hokey finish.

The Dust Brothers won over RybAxel in what probably the weakest outing of the two teams so far. It just didn’t mesh will and felt sloppy and rushed. I don’t know why. It just seemed off. It says a lot when Rusev and Big E put on a better match afterwards. Rusev isn’t THAT bad and Big E continues to improve. It sucks that Big E’s IC Title reign was wasted and he seems to be getting a “de-push” for some reason. Maybe they’re putting him through “the test” to see if he can survive this before putting him back on track to the top. Big E has more potential than a lot of people would believe and Rusev showed more promise this time out as well.

Fandango is a decent wrestler and should be getting a better spot on the show than a Total Divas storyline match. Summer Rae and Layla weren’t bad, but it just didn’t feel right. This match could have been on a RAW.

The WWE Title Money in the Bank match was not that great. For a match full of main eventers, it just didn’t have the fun of the briefcase one. I never want anyone to get hurt, but it just felt too “safe”. Not just in carnage, but in creativity. I wanted to get into it, but it didn’t do it for me. There were a few okay spots, but I think this match proved that Money In The Bank matches are best suited for younger guys and midcarders looking to prove something. To be fair, Sheamus, Kane, Cena, and Orton aren’t exactly my favorite people to watch. I can appreciate Orton when faced with a good opponent, but Wyatt and Cesaro weren’t give any spotlight in this. Reigns is also exposed because he’s REALLY limited. I like him. He has charisma and tons of potential, but as of right now he’s just a cool looking guy that looks the part but brings nothing but dullness and weak moves to the table. He’s like a sloppier face Randy Orton with long hair. If anything he’s “Samoan Test”. The leaning tower of ladder was cool, but it looked too much like a video game where everyone was no selling and just brawling and doing moves to each other. There was barely any suspense. It was painfully obvious that Cena would win that it was almost shocking to for it to happen. It was like expecting to get kicked in the nuts and then get surprised that it actually happened.

This was a weak show. I wasn’t even expecting to enjoy it, but it was actually aggravating to know this is how I spent my Sunday night. I can’t wait until I can cancel my subscription to the WWE Network. It’s just not worth my time or money anymore.
