I’m not a science fiction guy. I enjoy some, but I’m a bigger fan of comedies and dramas. Yeah, of course I’m a fan of Terminator, Back to the Future, and a few other more broad sci-fi movies but it’s the space stuff and the extra nerdy stuff that never tickled my fancy. This means I look down on Star Wars, Star Trek, and the Lord of the Rings. I know that’s sacrilege for most people, but it’s just not my cup of tea and I can’t get behind it. It’s not that I’m a snob. I’m a big fan of 80’s cheese and I love professional wrestling. We all have our own “nerd” specialties. Sci-fi just isn’t mine. Or is it? After sitting down with a loved one with the DVD set of Firefly and Serenity my mind was kind of blown. This show was great stuff. I didn’t think I’d get into it, but the show sucks you in like no other. There is a balance of decent action, funny lines, cheesy lines, and odd ball science fiction stuff. It just works. The tone of how the story is presented is perfect. It’s a tongue-in-cheek popcorn show that does not disappoint. In that respect, it reminds me a lot of the first season of Heroes. The show centers around a crew of misfits traveling around space on a space ship. It’s a western meets space. Yeah, you know what… I can’t properly describe it. I can understand why people see this and then only mention it because it’s hard as hell to describe without sounding like a crazy person. Just know the show is worth checking out. It’s one of those shows that was cancelled WAY TOO SOON, but becomes a cult hit afterwards. I have no problem in putting this up there with “Arrested Development”, “Sports Night”, and “Freaks and Geeks” in the best shows to be cancelled too soon. If you’re looking for something fun to watch to distract you completely from the world around you then this is a show to watch. I full heartedly recommend you watch the 14 episodes of the show and then watch the movie “Serenity” afterwards. It’s pretty much a guaranteed good time. Stupid sci-fi.
