"The Green Hornet"

BY MIKEY MIGO

I like Seth Rogen. I like Michel Gondry. That said, I really didn’t know much about The Green Hornet at all. I had trouble remembering if it were a TV show and a comic or just a TV show. I kind of know the “look” of the characters. There’s the main dude and then Bruce Lee as Kato. When I first heard Rogen was going to be doing this movie I was a bit shocked. I’m a fan of his stuff so I was open minded, but it was jarring. Then he got in better shape and you start to get a little confused. What the hell is this thing? Then I read that Michel Gondry was directing it which gave it even more credibility. The dude directs movies like really good music videos. One of my favorite movies of all time is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I thought Be Kind Rewind was underrated. I didn’t like The Science of Sleep, but I dug the visual ambition he took upon himself in it. His eye for things is great. I didn’t know shit about the movie going in other than I like two of the main ingredients. What happened surprised me. I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. Gondry made the movie look great, Rogen was his normal funny self, and the story that Rogen and partner in crime Evan Goldberg wrote was fun as shit. Jay Chou did great as Kato and was fun to watch interact with Rogen. We also get Christoph Waltz playing one of the most insecure bad asses I’ve ever seen. He was great in Inglorious Basterds, but to see him play a somewhat tongue-in-cheek character was cool. I’m happy to see he has more range than evil Nazi. Cameron Diaz is in it, but her character is kind of lame. I was shocked to see Tom Wilkinson, Edward James Olmos, and Edward Furlong in this movie. Going into the movie blind to reviews and full preview ended up providing me some welcomed surprises. The movie is simple. He’s a party animal and his rich self made father doesn’t approve. Father dies, and then the party animal shapes up with the help of a mechanically inclined friend/side kick. Bam! Bam! Bad guys. I was leery with the movie being PG13 because Rogen being censored isn’t appealing. He doesn’t smoke weed in it, but he drinks. We don’t get f-bombs, but they say the word “shit” almost a funny amount of times. There are no boobs, but yeah… there’s no boobs. Still, it’s a fun movie. It’s almost two hours long, but really doesn’t feel like it at all. It flows, it’s funny, it’s got great action, and it’s worth checking out. It’s no Dark Knight, Spiderman, or Iron Man flick but it’s not without its own merits. If you want to laugh and have a good time then this is a movie you’ll want to add to your watch list. It’s my favorite super hero movie so far of 2011. Yep. B+
