"The Switch"

I try to avoid Jennifer Anniston romcoms. I think she’s attractive and likeable enough, but for some reason I just can’t force myself to sit down with one of her movies. There are exceptions. She was good in Office Space, Marley & Me, The Good Girl, and others. It’s just it feels she always goes for the safe movies and safe roles. Movies you can sum up in one single sentence and put a nice little bow on and put on a shelf to forget about forever. On the flipside, I love me some Jason Bateman. He was great in Arrested Development, Dodgeball, Teen Wolf Too, The Ex, Extract, Juno, Hancock, and pretty much everything he has ever been in. He is easily one of the most underrated leading men out there today. He’s hilarious, but in an often understated way. He doesn’t need to do a silly voice or wear a costume to carry a movie, but he still sometimes does that and it’s just as hilarious. So that and a 2 AM bout of “I don’t wanna go to sleep yets” is what got me to watch. Then I find out that Jeff Goldblum and Juliette Lewis are supporting stars and I’m officially “in”. I start it up expecting to be bored to sleep and it ends up being pretty damn good. The plot revolves around Anniston and Bateman being best friends. She wants a baby to the point she wants artificial insemination. Bateman is against the idea and gets drunk. He ends up switching out the sperm with his. Jump ahead seven years, her son is seven and she’s moving back to New York where she left Bateman at. They hang out a little, but the bond between the little boy and Bateman grows. The little dude in this movie was great. Thomas Robinson plays “Sebastian”, he’s a worrisome little guy. He is as neurotic as Bateman, he is a hypochondriac, and he collects unused frames. That’s cool enough and fun enough character traits for an adult, but this is a little kid. Thomas Robinson did a really good job and I hope he sticks around. Bateman was solid, Anniston was better than normal, and Goldblum and Lewis were funny in their roles. Still, it’s the kid who stole the show for me. The content was adult in the movie, but I about pooped myself when I found out it was PG13. The standard and practices let a lot slide in this one. This isn’t the best romantic comedy I’ve recently seen, but it’s definitely not the worst. If you like the cast or just a good natured comedy then I recommend it. Go in with low expectations like me and you’ll be in for a pretty pleasant surprise. B
