I was always a fan of the Scream franchise. The first one came out at the perfect time to have a proper impression on my youth. I remember seeing the second one at the drive in and then the third also in theatres. It wasn’t a huge thing. I didn’t get the mask or really get that into horror movies. The main reason I never got into horror was the predictability and formulaic nature of it all. Even at a young age it was obvious. The Scream movies acknowledged that crap and put their own twist on it. The series got a little weak towards the end and faded away somewhat gracefully. When I heard they were rebooting the series with a fourth installment I was a bit worried. Then the pieces started being put together. Wes Craven was back on board, and then Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell. That instantly gives it credibility within its own world. So the originals are back. Then the rest of the casting is filled out with Hayden Paneittiere, Alison Brie, Emma Roberts, and Marley Shelton. That’s just some of the females involved. The male casting included Anthony Anderson, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, and others. On top of that, we get cameos from Anna Paquin, Kristin Bell, and Shenae Grimes. I finally got to sit down and watch this movie. Going into it I already had my mind set on who I thought was going to be the killer and how it was going to go. I am thrilled to admit I was not only wrong, but the twist took me by surprise. I won’t spoil anything here. The older characters are all older and moved on… sorta. Sidney(Campbell) wrote what seems like a self help book about moving on, Dewey is the Sheriff and is married to former reporter, Gale. Gale is stuck in the past and keeps milking the old Ghostface story. She wants to move on, but her small town life isn’t providing much inspiration. Sidney comes to town on the anniversary of the original murders on a book tour. Her niece (Emma Stone) and her friends are the new “kids” in the movie. They’re made up of the same typical stereotypes. A hot chick gets killed and the story continues. The kills are more out of nowhere and surprising than witty or funny. There’s more of a cold tone and slasher feel to this one. By the end of the movie you think you know what’s going on, but they switch that shit up. I had some optimism going into this movie and when it was all said and done I can say that optimism was not only met, but exceeded a little bit. The Freddy reboot sucked, SAW movies are goreporn, Final Destination is weak, and there’s not much out there of substance. I’m not saying this is a great movie by any means, but it’s better than what I just mentioned. If you’re a fan of the original Scream movies, “who-dunit” thrillers, or a fun movie in general then you’ll enjoy this one. Bring on Scream 5! B+
