BY MIKEY MIGO
I was looking forward to this movie for awhile. Danny McBride is hilarious. I love his show “Eastbound and Down”, I loved his movies, and he just seems like one of the coolest dudes ever. James Franco is another guy I’m a fan of. I don’t like his movies all the time, but he’s generally a cool guy. His career choices are amazing and I applaud his take on life. Then we toss in Natalie Portman, probably the best actress out there right now, and the always awesome Zooey Deschanel. The support is rounded out by the evil Justin Theroux, Rasmus Hardiker, and more. The story is that McBride and Franco are midevil brothers. Franco is the successful, good looking warrior and McBride is the screw up of the family. Shit goes down and the brothers take on a journey. It comes down to McBride having to man up and save the day. Hilarity… sometimes ensues. I dunno. I just wasn’t too impressed with the movie. In fact, I can flat out say this movie was a disappointment. I laughed a few times, but I never really found myself caring about what was going on. McBride gets in some good one-liners, but not enough to really hang my hat on. It feels like everyone is just phoning it in. I read that there was no written dialogue and that everything was improvised. It just didn’t work. It felt like everyone had a different movie in their heads. There are better comedies out there and better performances out there of pretty much everyone in the movie. To me the stand outs were Justin Theroux as the evil “Leezar” and Rasmus Hardiker as McBride’s sidekick “Courtney”. I’ve always been a fan of Justin Theroux. He’s a really solid actor and his writing is always good. I always see “Joe from Six Feet Under” when I see him, but with this movie it was a huge departure. His take on the character is hilarious. Then there’s this Rasmus Hardiker guy. He has a familiar face, but I don’t recall from where. He doesn’t get in a whole lot of lines, but when he does it’s awesome. Pay attention to his reactions and not automatically like the guy. The girls were hot. Natalie Portman is advertised like she’s a main star, which I guess she is, but she’s not nearly in it as much as you’d think. Zooey Deschanel is funny when she’s on screen, but it really felt like she was wasted. I’m not saying this movie wasn’t funny. It was amusing and not a horrible waste of time. I just felt really flat and soulless. I’m not saying to not watch it. That’s your call. But I have to throw this warning out there. If you were like me and anticipated this movie then for the love of Jebus… lower your expectations. Okay, you got that? Now lower them even more. C
