BY MIKEY MIGO
I was curious about this movie when it came out, but I just never put in the effort to see it. I am an avid SNL fan and over the past year or two I’ve gotten burnt out on Kristen Wiig. She’s awesome, but it feels like she plays the same three or four characters in every sketch. I’ve wanted her to move on from the show and focus on movies. Low and behold this is her first starring role! She was cool in her smaller roles in movies, but she’s a strong enough personality to carry a movie. Bridesmaids is a movie that proves it. I had lower expectations, but this movie ended up being pretty damn good. The plot revolves around Wiig’s character, a woman whose life is falling apart. She’s in a rut and nothing is going her way. Her best friend, Maya Rudolph, pops up with the announcement that she’s getting married. She goes with Wiig as the maid of honor and then the rest of bridesmaids are Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy, and Rose Byrne. They all play their roles well. McLendon-Covey is a cynical and snarky mother, Kemper is the quiet nice one, McCarthy is the vulgar one, and Byrne is the overbearing new friend. Everything Wiig does fails big. Byrne basically steps in and takes over. Wiig’s life sucks more and it leads to a big blow up. At the end everyone is happy, but you’d expect that with this kind of movie. It’s NOT a “chick version of Hangover” at all. I’m a fan of both movies, but I was a little worried. The trailer didn’t do my worries any favors either. This movie has A LOT more heart than The Hangover. I enjoyed this movie. There were a few points that I found myself laughing out loud. I cringed at the start of the “food poisoning/sick” scene because poop jokes? C’mon. The results had me rolling. I’ve never seen it done that way and its original was really appreciated. It was just a solid comedy that surprised the hell out of. It did really well at the box office and is a strong sign of Wiig’s blooming movie career. Ebert wrote that it was “the best female-driven, R-rated comedy of all time” and I really can’t argue. This is easily one of the best comedies I’ve seen in 2011. I want a sequel! A-
