"Peep World"

I had a few thoughts before seeing this movie. I was iffy because Cameron Diaz has been trying REALLY hard in the press to come off as a “party girl” with a “potty mouth”. She’s gone out of her way to much that it’s gotten a little weird. I don’t think anyone confused her for the generic romcom actress. She’s done her share, but anyone who watches movies knows she can be funny. I just didn’t know if an hour and a half of her being “naughty” was something I cared enough about. The other thoughts were that I like Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake a lot. Then I read that Jake Kasdan directed this. He has a great track record so I was more interested. I got the chance and I took it. This past week I had the pleasure of watching this R Rated comedy. The plot is that Cameron Diaz plays a gold-digging, vulgar, ego maniac. She gets dumped by her rich husband and goes back to teaching. She’s miserable and a “Peep World”. She is courted by Jason Segel, the gym teacher but she wants to hook up with the new sub, Justin Timberlake. She wants implants so she starts finding ways to rip people off to get to her goal. I’m not going to clean this up. I really didn’t feel this movie. It was hard to connect with on any level. I ONLY found myself laughing at Lucy Punch. She played Diaz’s over the top goody-two-shoes rival. She had some hilarious lines and she stole the movie if you ask me. Segel was cool and fun, but Timberlake was weird. He’s normally on his A-Game, but this might be the worst comedic performance of his so far. There’s a dry hump scene that ALMOST saves it, but not really. The people who weren’t on the poster were funniest. We get John Michael Higgins, a gruff Eric Stonestreet, Phyllis Smith(From “The Office”!), Thomas Lennon, and others. All in all it wasn’t horrible. It wasn’t the best comedy I’ve seen by a long shot. It’s not a movie I’d recommend going out of your way to see. Wait for this to pop up on cable or Netflix. The whole “drunk, vulgar, sex crazed, Peep World” thing isn’t new. In 2008 a comedy called “Lower Learning” came out about a school full of these “Peep Worlds”. THAT is the movie you want to watch. This one, eh. Diaz puts in the elbow grease, it’s amusing enough, and Lucy Punch is awesome in this. Other than that it’s a pretty forgettable movie. I might have had too high of hopes. B-
