I did not expect much. I’ve been digging the Marvel comic movies over the past few years, but this last drop of Thor and Captain America didn’t do much for me. I still haven’t seen Thor despite the fact that everyone telling me it was good. I WILL see it. Maybe even before you read this review of Captain America. I don’t know why, but our paths crossed. I took the two hours and watched this latest superhero flick. Chris Evans has been awesome since the start and I’m happy to see him in a starring role like this. Then we get Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Stanley Tucci, and a slew of others. I never knew the “origin story” of Captain America so this was also educational. The story goes that a small runty guy wants to join the military to defend the country in World War II. They keep rejecting him, but during a fight he catches the eye of a mad scientist. He is then given the Wolverine “Weapon X” treatment and is bulked up, can run fast, jump far, and basically has increased power. He’s now a super hero. At first he’s a public figure. He gets the kids excited and is the face of the military. He comes in and ends up saving the day. I won’t get into many more details, but that’s about it. It’s hard not to like a guy who’s fighting against the Nazis. Hugo Weaving is an awesome bad guy. He’s another super powered guy, but his head is a red skull. His name is “Red Skull”. What more do you need to know? I normally don’t like Tommy Lee Jones for some reason. He’s a cool guy in interviews, but his roles always seem to the same one dimensional type of guy. He didn’t stray too far from that here, but the way it was written made him seem way more endearing than I’ve seen in a long time. One of his lines got the biggest laughs from me, so take that for what it’s worth. They even start the official Avenger tie in off the bat with Howard Stark, Iron Man’s daddy, being involved with Cap’s creation. I wish they’d have stuck with John Slattery from Iron Man 2, but Dominic Cooper is good. This movie is charming, funny, has great action, and has a well liked hero. I surprisingly have no real complaints about this movie at all. It might even be better than Iron Man, but I’ll need some time to let it simmer before jumping to that conclusion. Bring on the sequels and bring on The Avengers! A-
