"The American Poop Movie"

I am not a movie snob. I’m a movie nerd, sure. I know too much about Woody Allen, I watch commentaries whenever I can, and I could do some serious damage in a movie trivia contest. I like all movies. I like the stuffy indie dramas, I like comedies, I like romantic comedies, I can deal with horror, and I pride myself on the variety I’ll force myself to watch. I’m not a snob, dammit. I’ve watched most of the American Pie DVD sequels, the National Lampoon fiascos, and just about any comedy I can. If it’s R rated and a comedy I’m in. I know not all are going to be as hilarious as a Apatow, Kevin Smith, Wes Anderson, etc movie, but I look past that. I know the pains and horror of filmmaking. It’s not easy so I look for the bright side of things. I had trouble find the bright side of things in this 2006 comedy. It’s called “The American Poop Movie”. So off the bat I’m not expecting Shakespeare. I’m still allowed to hope for an enjoyable viewing experience, right? I did and I was let down. I have trouble accepting any movie that has as many fart jokes as this movie. It just feels like I’ve seen this movie a million times already. It’s about a college graduate who can’t find a job so he’s working as a janitor or plumber or something that involves poop and plungers. He was the good looking smart ass popular guy in school and now he’s having trouble in life. Whoa is him. He wants to go to LA to be a star, but can’t let go. Meanwhile his dream girl is out there for him to drool over and have really bad conversations with. My problem is that it felt like people were acting and reciting lines. Nothing about this movie felt natural. It felt like someone saw another shitty comedy and said “I can do that”. Then THIS was made. The same pop punk style music, the same style jokes, the same forced “man’s man” chemistry of guys being vulgar together, creepy and bad old people actors, and the same “someday I’ll be a star” storyline. It’s a shit humor movie that tries to pretend it has heart buried underneath. I won’t lie, it stings knowing this kind of movie can get a real budget when that of substance gets pushed to the side. I don’t blame anyone. Writer, Director, and Producer Joe Kingsley got to make a movie. That’s awesome. I watched it with an open mind and I just didn’t like it. He made another movie too and I hope it’s better. The direction was seriously okay and I’m sure the script could have been funny, but this just didn’t work for me. I’m not like offended or anything, but I can’t recommend this to anyone. You should support independent cinema all day long, but not this one. C-
