BY MIKEY MIGO
I read about this movie months ago and then in turn forgot about it. I was excited. I enjoy seeing Steve Coogan do his thing. He’s a hilarious man and any chance I get to see him in a comedic lead I’m going to take it. In this his costar, Rob Brydon is hilarious as hell as well. In 2006 these two teamed up with director Michael Winterbottom for “A Cock and Bull Story”. The idea behind it was that these two were playing crazy fictional versions of themselves. It’s nothing too new. Larry David does it well on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and it’s at the point where I don’t know where it all started. When it’s done bad, it’s cheesy and lame. When it’s good, it’s hilarious. I’m happy to say this film was hilarious. The plot picks up a few years after the 2006 project. What’s interesting here is that this movie was a television series, but cut down to a decent movie length. This time Coogan drags Brydon along for a road trip. Great stuff. It’s one of those character driven independent type of movies. By that I mean that it’s about the interaction between the two main characters more than what’s going on around them. The chemistry is awesome here. Both guys carry their weight and are both equally dickish, funny, and both got in some great lines. There are few points where they’re just sitting around being silly with trying to upstage each other’s bad impressions. It goes too far in all the right ways. In the end you expect the movie to be wrapped up all nicely with a bow and a happy fade out. Not the case! I won’t spoil the ending, but I don’t think any mainstream US comedy would have the balls to go the route they did. It’s a movie that I found myself amused from credits to credits. It’s one of the better comedies I’ve seen in awhile. If you have a chance, see this. B+
