BY MIKEY MIGO
I remember seeing the trailer for this movie a few months back and being interested. Then I just sort of forgot about it. 2011 was a pretty ho-hum year for comedies. Sure, we got Bridesmaids, Horrible Bosses, The Hangover 2, and a few random others but nothing really THAT spectacular. Nothing that I’ll be too excited to see on Comedy Central in three or four years. The movies lacked a certain edge. They got vulgar, but in a clean cookie-cutter way. Nothing really pushed any envelopes. You’d think a movie called “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy” would… and it did. The movie is about a group of 30 year old friends coming of age and trying to have one big “last hurrah” in the form of an orgy. It gets weird really fast. The thing about this movie is that it doesn’t really hit hard on any level. It was funny, but I didn’t find myself laughing out loud all that much. It also has a sense of drama to it, but I didn’t find myself connecting to any of the characters. I’m in the same age group as these folks, but it just felt… I dunno… off. The cast rocked. I think that’s why I was so interested. Jason Sudeikis, Leslie Bibb, Martin Star, Lake Bell, Michelle Borth, Nick Kroll, Tyler Labine, Angela Sarafyan, Lindsay Sloane, Lucy Punch, Will Forte, Don Johnson, and Rhys Corio. THAT is one helluva cast. They all did well, but it did feel like everyone involved was coasting. It was like they tried to downplay everything to make it seem more natural, but it didn’t work for me. I like Jason Sudeikis a lot and have been a fan of his on SNL for a long time. His movie stuff has been solid, but I don’t know how I feel about him being a lead anymore. I just can’t get behind him too much. I don’t blame him though. The tone just never caught on. The flow was weird. It reminded me of a movie like “Adventureland”. You think you’re going to get a HILARIOUS comedy, but it ends up being a really dry and awkward indie that’s like 75% comedy, 20% drama, and 5% boobs. It bordered on great and the area that’s modern “National Lampoon” style movie. It’s obviously done on the low and the done knowing it won’t be a HUGE movie. It’ll find its audience in DVD, on demand, and in the future. It’s an enjoyable movie and I did like it. I know it sounds like I didn’t, but it was a good movie. It just didn’t really meet the expectations I had going in. B
