"Back to the Future III"

I’ve not watched any movie in the past few weeks so I had to dig into the collection to find a movie that I’ve never reviewed before but knew enough about and remembered enough of to give a proper perspective on it. That movie turned out to be Back to the Future III! The third and final part of the Back to the Future trilogy seems to be disregarded more times than not. In comparison to the first two movies, it would be hard to live up to that to begin with. In a fair grading curve, I think it’s safe to say Back to the Future III was still better than A LOT of movies and even better than another third movie bastard like The Godfather III. Am I crazy? Probably. Let’s figure out why it’s so easy to not love this movie. In this one they travel back to 1885. Marty is still trying to get back to 1985. Doc is still a crazy genius. Biff Tannen and his family are still dicks. Marty still has to help his ancestors find their way. The score is still epic. The heart is still there. I think the downfall is that despite all of these awesome qualities, we’ve all seen it before. A few dusty derby hats and some cowboy antics aren’t enough to make a difference. There is no character development or story advancement. What happens? Doc Brown finds a lady friend? That’s just not fulfilling enough for the audience. The closure at the end doesn’t really feel all that impactful. It felt tacked on. I do love this movie because of all the familiar qualities. It’s just a disappointment compared to the greatness we got in those first two. C+
