"Groundhog Day"

BY MIKEY MIGO

I’ve still not caught anything new so we’re going to again dip in the well and talk about a movie that I’ve not publically reviewed yet. This week I want to look at the 1993 classic Groundhog Day. Right now I keep reliving the same days in my head so it’s probably suitable. It’s hard to believe this movie is almost twenty years old. I remember seeing it as a ten year old as part of a double bill at the drive in with my folks. I’ve always been a huge Bill Murray fan and always will. This movie is a prime example why everyone should love this guy. For those who haven’t seen this movie, trust me in saying that it’s one of the best written and smartest comedies of all time. People will sleep on it, but if you see it you’ll get it. Bill Murray plays a weather man who is sent to cover the Groundhog Day festivities. He doesn’t want to be there and is kind of a jerk to everyone. After one long day he goes to sleep and wakes up in the same day. He is forced to repeat Groundhog Day over and over again. This leads to some great stuff. He has a main love interest in Andie MacDowell, but the rest of the awesome cast is composed of the likes of Chris Elliot, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Brian Doyle-Murray. The whole movie revolves around him trying to get it all right. After a while he takes advantage of the situation and has fun with. Eventually it gets depressing and morbid to the point that he kills himself in every way possible. No matter if he’s good, bad, crazy, or what… he keeps waking up in the same day. I never knew this and I bet most people don’t realize it, but Harold Ramis has said that this “over and over again” curse would have lasted well over 10 years. When you watch the movie with that in mind it does take a much darker turn. Of course a movie like this needs to have a perfect person to carry it and make it heart-warming, heart-wrenching, and hilariously charming. Bill Murray delivered on all of that shit. If you’re a good person and don’t love this movie then you’re lying about one of those things. A
